Real Valladolid Monitor Sergi Canós as Valencia Consider January Contract Termination
Sergi Canós could be heading for the exit at Valencia in January, with Real Valladolid among the clubs monitoring his situation ahead of the winter transfer window.
According to Spanish outlet El Gol Digital, Valencia are planning to terminate the winger’s contract if he has recovered from his injury by the time the January market opens. The club want to avoid registering him for the second half of the season, allowing them to keep a squad place available for potential reinforcements.
Canós, 29, has struggled to establish himself at Mestalla since arriving from Brentford in August 2023. His current contract runs until June 2027, but he is not considered part of Valencia’s long-term plans.
Canós’ recovery could determine his January future
The winger’s situation is closely linked to his recovery from a serious knee injury. Canós suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a match between Real Valladolid and Cultural Leonesa in April. He underwent surgery on 13 May and returned to individual ball work at Valencia’s Paterna training complex in mid-October.
According to El Gol Digital, his physical condition when the transfer window opens will determine whether Valencia move ahead with the proposed contract termination.
The club had already explored ways to part company with the player during the summer, including a mutual agreement or a possible dismissal if no agreement could be reached. The January window now represents another opportunity to resolve his situation.
Real Valladolid among the clubs interested
Real Valladolid are reportedly leading the interest from the Spanish second division. The club already know Canós well, having signed him on loan in September 2025 in a deal that was scheduled to run until June 2026.
The winger suffered his serious knee injury during that loan spell, but Valladolid could now consider bringing him back if he becomes available as a free agent.
A contract termination would make a potential move considerably easier for interested clubs, as they would not need to negotiate a transfer fee with Valencia.
Valencia looking to avoid further financial commitment
Canós’ departure would also help Valencia address the financial burden associated with his contract. During his loan spell at Valladolid, Valencia reportedly continued to cover €1.65 million of his salary, while the Pucela paid €150,000.
The winger arrived from Brentford in August 2023 on a four-year contract and made 60 appearances for Valencia before his loan move, scoring five goals and providing eight assists.
For now, his immediate future depends on his rehabilitation. If he is fit enough to return in January, Valencia are expected to pursue a contract termination, potentially opening the door for Valladolid or another Championship-level Spanish club to secure his services.
